Veteran Benefits Resources: Claims, Increases, and SMC
This is a map, not a dump of every article we have published. Most veterans do not need fifty explainers. They need the next filing that matches the file.
A rating increase is the right tool when a service-connected condition has gotten worse. Special Monthly Compensation is the right tool when the 10–100% table never priced how you live — loss of use, a regular need for personal help, or being confined to the home. A secondary condition sits in between: a new percentage tied to a disability VA already granted.
Start with the section that matches a typical week, not the heading that sounds most familiar.
Veterans Promise is a veteran-led team based in Nashville. We work with veterans nationwide on rating increases and SMC. The first conversation is a complimentary consult. We do not bill five times a VA rating increase. This hub is general information, not legal or medical advice. We are not affiliated with VA. VA decides every claim. No one can honestly guarantee a result.

Start here: three questions, three doors
If you already know the door, skip to that section. If you do not, answer the least comfortable question honestly.
-
Has a rated condition gotten worse? More pain, less range, worse sleep, missed work, a new device. That is an increase. Start with how to increase a VA disability rating.
-
Does someone help you through a normal day, or are you substantially stuck at home? Or are you already at 100% and still wondering what the letter left out? That is SMC. Start with Special Monthly Compensation, then Aid & Attendance or housebound as the facts fit.
-
Did one service-connected condition cause another? Knee to back, pain to depression, medication to a new diagnosis. That is a secondary, not a higher percentage on the original code. Start with VA secondary conditions.
Two doors at once is common. Filing everything at once is still a poor default. The consult is for picking the filing that fits.
Special Monthly Compensation
SMC is extra or higher tax-free compensation for facts the regular rating table does not score. It is not a bonus for reaching 100%, not automatic at any combined rating, and not the same filing as an increase. Use these pages when function, anatomy, or confinement is the story the percentage missed.
-
Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)
Lettered levels in plain language, how K differs from L and S, and how SMC sits next to an increase or a secondary. Open this first if you only know the acronym.
-
SMC-K (add-on for loss or loss of use)
A 2026 veteran-alone add-on of $139.87, not a replacement of the 10–100% table. Can attach from 0% to 100% and to most SMC basic rates except O, Q, and R. Up to three K awards.
-
Aid & Attendance (SMC-L)
Compensation A&A, not pension A&A. For a regular need for help with bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, or staying safe because of service-connected disability — or other L tests such as listed loss of use. A spouse who has been doing that work for years still counts.
-
Housebound (SMC-S)
Two doors into S: a single 100% disability plus additional disability independently ratable at 60% or more (you can still leave the house), or being substantially confined to the home by service-connected disability. S is not L. Mixing them wastes months.
-
VA Form 21-2680
The exam that often makes or breaks Aid & Attendance and housebound. Who completes it, and what incomplete answers cost you.
-
100% is not the ceiling
Schedular 100% is the top of the regular pay table, not the last benefit the statute allows. If the letter stopped at 100% and nobody asked about help at home, loss of use, or a 100-plus-60 combination, this is the page. We review 100% files.
-
TDIU vs 100% vs SMC
TDIU pays at the 100% rate when service-connected disabilities keep you from substantially gainful work. It is not a schedular 100% rating. SMC can still apply. We review TDIU files.

Rating increases and secondary conditions
Not every higher check is SMC. If a rated condition has changed, file the change. If a new problem is caused by one you already have, claim the secondary. Those filings can run alongside SMC. They are not the same filing. Increases and secondaries are core work for us, not a side errand on the way to Aid & Attendance.

How to increase a VA disability rating
When the rating on paper no longer matches daily life, what evidence tends to matter, and how to tell an increase apart from a supplemental, a higher-level review, a new condition, or SMC.
-
VA secondary conditions
Primary vs secondary in plain language, why the nexus has to run through a condition VA already granted, and when a new percentage still will not move the combined rating — which is when SMC may be the better next question.
-
VA combined ratings (VA math)
Why 50 + 30 is not 80. Whole-person method, a link to VA’s official combined ratings table (we do not reprint it), and when SMC is the better question than another 10%.

2026 pay rates
Use the table to see what a rating actually pays. Then come back to the SMC pages if daily function is the part the table never captured.
-
2026 VA disability pay rates
Current compensation tables, effective December 1, 2025. Veteran-alone 100% is $3,938.58 a month. Dependents change the number at 30% and above. Those figures are the regular table. SMC, when granted, is a different rate schedule.

How Veterans Promise helps
Start with how Veterans Promise works if you want the consult, the file review, and the no-5×-fee contrast in one place. If you are choosing who to work with — complimentary consult, SMC focus, we do not bill five times a VA rating increase, and free accredited alternatives — use VA disability claims guidance. That page is the comparison. How we work is the first-call walkthrough. They are not the same URL. Cost, 100% files, SMC, and whether we bill 5× a rating increase (we do not) also live on Veterans Promise FAQs.

Veterans Promise FAQs
Direct answers on cost, the complimentary consult, 100% files, SMC, increase vs secondary, and affiliation with VA. We do not invent a fee schedule here.
Read the page that fits. Then talk to a person. We review what is already rated, what has changed, and whether the next filing looks like an increase, a secondary, or SMC — including Aid & Attendance and housebound when the facts support them. If the right move is a straightforward increase, that is the work. We will not steer you into a different product because it is trendier.
We are based in Nashville and take files nationwide. The first conversation is a complimentary consult. Bring the latest rating decision if you have it, plus a medication list and an honest description of a typical week. If you have none of that yet, still call.
We will not promise a percentage, an SMC letter, a timeline, or a dollar amount. VA decides every claim. Our job is to match the filing to the file.

FAQ
Is this the same as the blog?
No. The blog is a handful of longer articles. This hub is the map: service pages for increases, SMC, Aid & Attendance, housebound, 100%, secondaries, and 2026 pay rates, plus three background posts.
Do I have to be at 100% to talk to you?
No. Increases are often the right work below 100%. Aid & Attendance is a function test, not a required percentage. If you are already at 100%, we still review the file. That is frequently where SMC was never asked.
Can I just file everything at once?
You can. It is rarely the cleanest move. An increase on a condition that has not changed, stacked with an SMC theory the records do not support, gives VA a lot of work and you a slow no. Pick the filing that fits.
Do you guarantee an increase or SMC?
No. Nobody can. We will tell you if we do not see a path worth filing.
If you know the door, start with the page. If you do not, start with a complimentary consult.
